Bitcoin Runes, a protocol for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) launched in August, has made a significant mark in the cryptocurrency market, generating $162.4 million in fees from over 15.6 million transactions within just four months. Data from Dune Analytics shows that the majority of these transactions occurred during the first two months, with daily volumes often exceeding 300,000 transactions.
On April 23, the protocol saw an exceptional peak, with NFT investors conducting over one million transactions—spanning minting, etching, transfers, and edicts—which accounted for a staggering 81.3% of the total Bitcoin network bandwidth for that day.
Despite this strong start, Bitcoin Runes has experienced a decline in daily transactions over the past two months, now averaging around 50,000 transactions per day. Initially, the protocol dominated daily transaction activity, but as time has progressed, Bitcoin (BTC) has regained its network dominance. Since July 16, BTC has consistently accounted for about 90% of network activity, while the remaining 10% is shared among Ordinals, BRC-20 tokens, and Runes.
The Runes protocol was introduced as a more efficient successor to Bitcoin Ordinals and as a competitor to the BRC-20 token standard, quickly gaining favor among many investors. Over the past four months, Runes has surpassed BRC-20 in daily transaction share on most days, with BRC-20 outperforming Runes on only 13 occasions. Out of the 15.6 million transactions recorded by the Runes protocol, mints make up more than 9 million transactions, while edicts and etching account for 6.5 million and 91,500 transactions, respectively.
Looking ahead, some analysts see potential for the Runes protocol to regain momentum. Pseudonymous decentralized finance researcher Ignas recently suggested that the real market opportunity for Runes might emerge several months after its initial launch. He pointed out that tokens like Runestone, RSIC, and PUPS are already seeing significant interest, driven by promises of new Rune token airdrops. However, he also warned of a possible market cooldown, reminiscent of the post-hype phase seen in previous NFT trends.
To capitalize on the evolving market dynamics, the Bitcoin layer-2 network Stacks is preparing to launch a trading solution specifically for Runes, BRC-20s, and Ordinals inscriptions. This new development could provide fresh trading opportunities and help revitalize interest in the Bitcoin Runes protocol, potentially reversing the recent decline in transaction volume.
