Cryptocurrency Exchange-Eraded Funds (ETFs) are leading the way in 2024, accounting for 13 of the top 25 ETF launches by year-to-date inflows. This surge in crypto ETF popularity was highlighted in a post by Nate Geraci, president of The ETF Store, an investment adviser specializing in ETFs. The data underscores a growing interest among investors in gaining exposure to cryptocurrencies through regulated financial products.
Of the approximately 400 new ETFs launched in 2024, the four biggest launches by inflows have all been spot Bitcoin ETFs. Leading the pack is BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which has amassed nearly $21 billion in inflows to date. This is followed by the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), with almost $10 billion in net inflows. The ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) and Bitwise Bitcoin ETF Trust (BITB) also rank among the top, each with around $2 billion in net inflows. These figures underscore the strong appetite for direct Bitcoin exposure through regulated financial products.
In addition to Bitcoin ETFs, Ethereum-focused products are also gaining traction. The iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA) is the leading Ether ETF, with over $1 billion in net inflows, according to data from Morningstar, a prominent fund research firm. ETHA reached this milestone in August, reflecting increasing investor interest in Ethereum as a digital asset.
Overall, total net assets in spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have surpassed $60 billion, according to Morningstar. This substantial growth indicates that cryptocurrency ETFs are no longer a niche market but a significant part of the broader ETF landscape. The market for cryptocurrency ETFs is expected to continue expanding, with new types of digital assets and diversified crypto indexes being introduced. Dave LaValle, Grayscale’s global head of ETFs, mentioned on August 12 that we can expect more single-asset products and diversified index-based products in the near future.
Several other proposed crypto ETFs are currently seeking regulatory approval, including new single-asset funds such as Solana ETFs and diversified crypto indexes like the Hashdex Nasdaq Crypto Index ETF. The demand for these products is so high that net inflows into spot crypto ETFs have exceeded "more than three times the largest one-year inflow of any ETF ever in the history of ETFs," LaValle added, highlighting the massive adoption of these financial products.
As the cryptocurrency market continues to mature, the rise of crypto ETFs represents a major step toward mainstream acceptance and integration of digital assets into traditional financial portfolios.
