Since the onset of April, the creation of over one million new tokens has been observed, with Ethereum witnessing the emergence of more than 370,000 tokens, while Solana hosted over 640,000, predominantly comprising memecoins. During this period, Ethereum's network alone saw the launch of 372,642 tokens, with a notable 88% introduced on Coinbase's layer-2 blockchain, Base. This surge in token creation has been paralleled by an unprecedented uptick in activity on layer-2 networks, largely driven by enthusiasts seeking to capitalize on the burgeoning memecoin trend.
Conor Grogan, a director at Coinbase, highlighted a similar statistic in a post on May 14, emphasizing that this figure exceeded twice the number of tokens created on Ethereum over the span of 2015 to 2023. Concurrently, the total value locked (TVL) on Base has skyrocketed by approximately 630% since the commencement of 2024, primarily propelled by the widespread frenzy surrounding memecoins. Solana, too, experienced a surge in token creation, with analytics from Step Finance indicating the birth of 643,227 new tokens within the same timeframe.
Platforms such as CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko have been swift to adapt, with the former listing the 500 newest tokens added to its platform in the preceding 30 days, the majority of which fall under the memecoin category. CoinGecko, on the other hand, has created a dedicated memecoin category, boasting more than 600 coins with a cumulative market capitalization of $52.7 billion, nearly half of Tether's market cap.
