SWIFT, the global messaging network facilitating international bank transfers, has announced plans to launch digital asset trials in 2025. Banks from North America, Europe, and Asia are preparing to participate in these trials, exploring how various digital currencies and assets can be used in financial transactions. SWIFT’s goal is to integrate multiple digital asset classes and currencies into its global banking network, providing financial institutions with unified access to both digital and traditional assets.
The digital asset trials will focus on several key areas: payments, foreign exchange, securities, and trade. These areas will involve multi-ledger delivery-versus-payment and payment-versus-payment transactions, allowing banks to settle trades and exchanges seamlessly using digital currencies. This is an important step as the financial world continues to evolve with blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.
One of the main challenges SWIFT aims to address is the growing fragmentation in the digital asset economy. The rapid development of different digital platforms has created what SWIFT refers to as a “complex web of digital islands,” making it difficult for institutions to operate smoothly across various networks. SWIFT’s unique position in the global banking system allows it to serve as a bridge between these disconnected networks, enabling interoperability between digital assets and existing fiat currencies.
The trials are part of a broader effort by SWIFT to ensure that digital assets and traditional financial systems can coexist harmoniously. Tom Zschach, SWIFT’s chief innovation officer, emphasized the importance of creating real-world applications that allow digital and traditional assets to work together. He stated that for digital currencies to succeed on a global scale, they must be able to seamlessly coexist with traditional money systems.
While the specific digital assets that will be part of SWIFT’s trials have not been disclosed, the organization has been actively exploring blockchain and tokenization technologies. In recent years, SWIFT has collaborated with central banks and other financial institutions to test the integration of tokenized commercial bank deposits and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) on a single platform.
As the global financial system continues to evolve, SWIFT’s digital asset trials in 2025 represent a significant step toward the mainstream adoption of digital currencies, potentially revolutionizing how financial institutions operate in the future.
