In a significant milestone for the cryptocurrency market, XRP has again flipped Tether’s USDT to secure its position as the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. This latest achievement comes amid regulatory changes and growing interest in XRP’s potential use cases.
As of January 3, XRP’s market capitalization surged to an impressive $138.98 billion, surpassing USDT, which experienced a $1.6 billion decline in market cap since December 30. This shift coincided with the European Union’s rollout of its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. MiCA imposes stricter requirements on stablecoin issuers, including the need for full reserves and operational licenses, which may have contributed to the decline in USDT’s market share.
XRP’s value has also grown substantially, trading at $2.43 and rising 17% over the last 14 days. Over the past year, the token has demonstrated an impressive 280% increase, driven by speculation around its use in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and broader market optimism.
USDT’s decline highlights the challenges stablecoin issuers face under evolving regulatory frameworks like MiCA. For instance, Coinbase Europe recently delisted USDT, citing noncompliance with these new regulations. Meanwhile, XRP’s decentralized nature and use case diversity have made it a strong contender in the crypto market.
XRP’s momentum has been further fueled by Ripple Labs’ recent initiatives, such as the launch of Ripple USD (RLUSD), a dollar-backed stablecoin designed for enterprise cross-border payments. RLUSD has already gained traction, with a market cap of $72 million, and plans for integration into Ripple Payments by 2025.
Market speculation surrounding the potential approval of a spot XRP ETF has been a major catalyst. In December, several companies, including WisdomTree and 21Shares, filed applications for spot XRP ETFs with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Such developments have bolstered investor confidence and fueled XRP’s price rally.
Despite USDT’s decline, Tether remains the dominant stablecoin, holding 67.21% of the $204 billion stablecoin market. However, XRP’s recent milestones underline its growing importance and versatility in the crypto ecosystem, setting the stage for a competitive and dynamic 2025.
