The Fantom Opera network team has introduced the "Gas Monetization Program" to reward developers for the gas fees generated by their applications. Under this program, eligible developers can receive 15% of the total gas fees generated by their apps. To qualify, an app must have completed more than 125,000 transactions and have been operational for at least three months. Six Web3 apps, including ParaSwap, Beethoven X, Stargate, LayerZero, WOOFi, and SpookySwap, have already been approved for the program and have collectively earned over 12,000 Fantom (FTM) tokens as rewards.
Inspired by the ad-revenue model of platforms like YouTube and Snapchat, the Gas Monetization Program aims to provide developers with an alternative source of revenue and contribute to a sustainable ecosystem for Fantom. However, not all apps will be eligible, as those with fewer than 125,000 transactions or less than three months of existence on the Fantom network will be automatically excluded.
The criteria for eligibility may change over time as the Fantom Foundation assesses its effectiveness. The team has addressed concerns that the program may discourage developers from creating gas-efficient contracts, emphasizing that gas efficiency remains crucial for app competitiveness, and any perceived abuse of the program may result in suspension from participation.
