MARA Holdings Inc., a prominent player in Bitcoin mining, has purchased 11,774 Bitcoin worth $1.1 billion, further strengthening its position in the cryptocurrency market. The acquisition, announced on December 10, raises MARA's Bitcoin holdings to 40,435, valued at $3.92 billion at a Bitcoin price of $97,000. This purchase was financed through a zero-coupon convertible note offering from November. The average cost per Bitcoin in this transaction was $96,000, showcasing MARA’s strategic efforts to enhance its cryptocurrency reserves.
In addition to its Bitcoin acquisition, MARA has achieved a significant milestone in its mining operations. The company’s hashrate surpassed 50 exahashes per second (EH/s), making it the first public Bitcoin miner to reach this level. This remarkable achievement follows a rapid increase from 36.9 EH/s at the end of the third quarter to the current level. MARA’s CEO, Fred Thiel, hinted at further expansion, indicating the company has additional mining equipment ready to deploy.
MARA’s mining success reflects its ongoing commitment to innovation and operational efficiency. The energized hashrate milestone aligns with its end-of-year target, signaling the company’s determination to maintain a leadership position in the industry.
Despite its impressive operational milestones, MARA’s stock closed 4.4% lower on December 10, trading at $22.81. This decline followed the announcement of its Bitcoin purchase and hashrate achievement. However, the company has been a standout performer in the crypto market rebound of 2023, with a 586% increase in stock value over the year.
MARA's treasury policy, updated in July, includes retaining all mined Bitcoin and using capital market instruments to grow its reserves, mirroring strategies employed by other major players like MicroStrategy. This policy reflects MARA’s belief in Bitcoin's long-term potential and integration into financial markets.
Bitcoin recently hit an all-time high of $104,000 before retreating to $97,090. MARA’s latest moves underscore its confidence in the future of cryptocurrency, even amid market fluctuations. By expanding its mining capacity and Bitcoin holdings, MARA is positioning itself as a dominant force in the Bitcoin mining sector. These developments highlight the growing convergence of traditional finance and cryptocurrency innovation.
