Political-themed meme coins, or PolitiFi tokens, have significantly outperformed other Meme coin categories in 2024. Despite being a small part of the meme coin market, PolitiFi tokens have seen remarkable growth. According to CoinGecko data, the market cap of PolitiFi tokens increased by 667% in 2024, reaching $592.4 million by August 27, a sevenfold jump from the start of the year.
Most of the top PolitiFi tokens are linked to Donald Trump, such as MAGA (TRUMP), MAGA HAT (MAGA), Super Trump (STRUMP), and Doland Trump (TREMP). However, ConstitutionDAO (PEOPLE) currently leads the category with a market cap of $334.6 million. This decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) was created in 2021 to buy a first-edition copy of the United States Constitution but continued trading even after losing the auction to billionaire Kenneth Griffith.
MAGA (TRUMP), inspired by Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan, is the second-largest PolitiFi token, with a market cap of $149.7 million. Despite having no official ties to Trump, the token's value has fluctuated in response to political events involving him. For example, MAGA rose 80% after Trump's victory in the 2024 Iowa Republican presidential caucuses and saw further gains following legal developments and an assassination attempt.
In a related development, Donald Trump recently released a new NFT collection, the "America First Collection," which offers 360,000 NFTs, the largest set to date. Minted on the Polygon blockchain, these NFTs feature Trump in various poses, including dancing and holding Bitcoins. Some NFTs come with exclusive perks, such as a dinner with Trump at his Florida golf club or a piece of the suit he wore during a debate with President Joe Biden. The collection was created by NFT INL LLC, which uses Trump's likeness under a paid license and clarifies that no funds will go toward his presidential campaign.
Overall, while PolitiFi tokens represent only a small fraction (1.5%) of the entire meme coin market, their rapid rise in value and the continued interest in political figures like Trump suggest they may continue to draw attention in the cryptocurrency space.
