The New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) is reportedly close to approving Ripple Labs' RLUSD stablecoin. Pegged to the U.S. dollar and backed by extra reserves, RLUSD could launch as soon as December 4, 2024. This new stablecoin aims to enhance Ripple's ecosystem and streamline cross-border payment processes.
Ripple Labs introduced RLUSD in April 2024 as a competitor to leading stablecoins like USD Coin (USDC) and Tether (USDT). The company aims to capture a share of the rapidly growing stablecoin market, which executives estimate could reach a $2 trillion market capitalization by 2028. Ripple’s focus with RLUSD is on delivering a stablecoin that offers trust, reliability, and broad utility.
Ripple began testing RLUSD on its XRP Ledger and the Ethereum network in August, signaling its ambition to integrate the stablecoin across multiple blockchains. The company has committed to maintaining transparency by conducting third-party audits and releasing monthly reports on the stablecoin’s cash and short-term reserve holdings.Ripple operates under its New York Trust Company Charter to comply with regulations. The NYDFS approval will mark a significant step in Ripple’s efforts to expand its offerings while adhering to strict regulatory standards.
Ripple has established partnerships with multiple exchanges to support RLUSD, including Uphold, Bitstamp, Bitso, MoonPay, Independent Reserve, CoinMENA, and Bullish. These collaborations will enhance liquidity and adoption, making RLUSD accessible to a broader audience.
Despite concerns from XRP holders about a potential pivot to RLUSD, Ripple has reiterated its dedication to using XRP alongside RLUSD. CEO Brad Garlinghouse emphasized that XRP will continue to play a critical role in enhancing liquidity and enabling faster
settlement for RLUSD transactions.
With the total stablecoin market value exceeding $196 billion as of November 29, 2024, Ripple’s RLUSD is entering a highly competitive and rapidly evolving space. The approval of RLUSD will not only strengthen Ripple’s position but also contribute to the broader adoption of stablecoins in cross-border payments and other financial solutions. Ripple’s move highlights the increasing demand for regulated, reliable stablecoins in the evolving crypto market.
